Episode 9: War makes it easy to disregard the emptiness of your life

I didn’t really take much notice of this scene when I first watched the episode – I was too interested in whether the orange-haired girl would confess her love for the yellow-haired boy – but actually, this down-and-out has-been soldier might be the most interesting part of the episode.

A recurring theme of this show is that war makes it easy to avoid existential despair. So long as you’re at war, you don’t have to confront how meaningless life is. Most of the characters who talk about the war are sorry that it’s over.
