Download: Namu Amida Butsu wa Ai no Uta – Cheesy 1980s style from 1992

Download: Namu Amida Butsu wa Ai no Uta is very, very cheesy. The animation looks sloppy by modern standards.

It is definitely classic “cyberpunk,” but it came out as the hype train was failing.

There are no cyborgs; there is a “cyberhelmet.” The plot is stolen from Max Headroom, but it’s a typical 1980s-style “drugs are bad” type plot, with computers instead of pharmaceutical drugs.

If Solty Rei was a high-production-value treatment of some of the blandest cyberpunk cliches, then Download: Namu Amida Butsu wa Ai no Uta is a low-production-value treatment of some of the best cyberpunk cliches, with a heavy dose of 1980s nostalgia and a soundtrack that sounds like Cowboy Bebop even though it predates it by 6 years.

There are awesome single-lens sunglasses and a motorcycle gang.

It delivers a Blade Runner homage using microfilm instead of a 3-D camera.
